At the Disney D23 Expo, some new info has been revealed regarding the upcoming fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The studio recently announced the new film’s subtitle as, On Stranger Tides. Pirates is scheduled for release during the summer of 2011, and will feature the return of Captain Jack as played by Johnny Depp. The new title isn’t as catchy as At World’s End, but it will do.
Production on Pirates 4: On Stranger Tides is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2010 around April or May. At the moment they haven’t confirmed a director for the feature even though earlier reports had Chicago helmer Rob Marshall up for the job. Since Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom won’t be reprising their roles for the fourth film, Disney is considering On Stranger Tides the first installment of a new trilogy.
Here are some trivia facts so far related to the movie (from IMDB):
# Russell Brand and Zac Efron were at one stage rumored to star.
# The title was revealed by Johnny Depp in character as Jack Sparrow, at Disney's D23 Expo on September 11, 2009.
# Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv said that this would "hopefully be the first of another trilogy."
# Oren Aviv said Disney had chosen to scale this movie down from the former in the series; "It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger. The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters." He agreed that there is a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow's back story that we haven't seen yet without confirming or denying that we might see some of that in the fourth movie
# After Walt Disney's chairman of 38 years, Dick Cook was fired, Johnny Depp talked to LA Times and said his enthusiasm for the fourth Pirates movie had reduced after Cook left the project. "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment," Depp said. "It was all born in that office." One of the reasons Johnny Depp committed to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) was because he trusted Cook, who supported him while "others at the studio were less than enthusiastic about my interpretation of the character, Dick was there from the first moment. He trusted me."
# Johnny Depp said he agreed to star in this, before "there was a script or anything".
